My blog will focus more on subjects that relate back to advertising and general creative inspiration, than to graphic design in particular. However it will also be a collection of thoughts, general musings, and things I've found that may be of interest. Spending the next few months in Vietnam and Cambodia (while learning how to kill a man with only my little finger) will mean blogging may be sporadic, but stick with it, some of might actually be interesting!

"I always knew you'd grow up to be a bender"
Now, there's a good chance that most of you won't have gone to see 'The Last Air Bender', the only reason we did was because 'Dispicable Me' was full. I won't go into too much detail, but basically it involves ninjas that can control the elements. Awesome.
The premise of the film was actually quite good, but the poor direction and acting sealed it's fate as one to miss. What was interesting however is that apparently Americans don't have the same slang meaning for 'bender' as the English, which lead to some pretty childish and equally amusing quotes (probably the only reason the film was bareable).
One of the things I learnt on my Year in Industry is that the same thing applies in advertising. Someone would come up with a great idea, a play on words or tag line that would work perfectly in English, only to have it shot down because the ad was also going out in France, Italy and Germany. This is something that the Producers of The Last Air Bender probably didn't consider. It's something that we havn't got to consider while at Uni, but I found it's quite a good habit to get into.

I definitely agree that it's important to look into all possibilities when it comes to your audience esp when using film.
ReplyDeleteI was going to go see this actually, but quite glad I didn't as the reviews weren't great!
